“Notebooks” vs. PDFs
In general, the reMarkable distinguishes between Notebooks, based on templates which have to be in the PNG format (portable network graphics) and the well-known PDF files (portable document format). The main difference is that with notebooks, you can add as many pages as you like, PDF’s are somewhat “static”, you can not add any more pages than those that were exisiting in the original PDF. You can also NOT mix PDF and PNG content, even though it would come handy sometimes.
For any given notebook, you can “mix” the templates used for the individual pages and also assign another template to content you already have written using the reMarkable.
Creating own templates
You also can create OWN templates with individual designs. To do that, you need to be aware of the size the PNG needs to have:
1872 x 1404 pixel (portrait) with a given dpi value of 226 for the reMarkable results in a necessary PNG dimension of 21.04 x 15.78 cm.
To create an individual template
1) you could use e.g. MS Excel (which shows no. of pixels for columns and lines), define everything to your needs
2) print it to PDF (I am using PDF-xchange from tracker software, https://www.pdf-xchange.de/lander6.php) then
3) save it as a PNG file (PDF x-change offers such a possibility directly)
4) Connect your reMarkable to the PC or Mac (where you have the content on) using the provided USB cable. Make sure that you have set the USB web interface under “Settings | Storage” to ON.
5) Transfer your individual PNG file to your reMarkable either via SSH protocol or via a thirdparty software like EInkPads Template installer https://www.einkpads.com/products/remarkable-template-installer-apple-computers (available for Mac OS, Windows or Linux, watch out to select the correct OS before purchasing). When using SSH, you need username “root”, the individual password for your rM as well as the IP address. Both the password as well as the IP address are disclosed in the “Settings-about” section (you might have to scroll down with your finger, it is disclosed at the bottom of the screen).
The place where your templates needs to go to is
/usr/share/remarkable/templates
6) then do a reboot, and bob’s your uncle
Attention: when you do a software update for your reMarkable, this folder is replaced with standard content from reMarkable. So for the time being, you have to RE-COPY your individual templates to the mentioned folder EVERYTIME you do a software update (the update can also occur automatically if you have not switched off under Settings | Device | Enable Updates). This is a bit inconvenient, but until reMarkable decides to let individual templates reside in a separate folder which is not deleted upon software refresh, you have to remember to do so. Best practice is to keep your individual templates in a special folder on your PC/Mac so you easily find them when you need them.
